Big Brother

I can't believe how much fun it is to watch my little ones interact. There is so much uninhibited emotion from Quinten towards his sister. If she is playing with a toy that he decides is "his" then she is not his favorite person, but two seconds later he does something really loving, like kiss or hug her, bring her a toy, or say something nice.

On my own again

Once again duty calls and Patrick is away. Greenwood for a week, back for one, then away again for another week. I wish it was just two weeks straight instead of split up. It is hard enough on Quinten when Papa goes away, when he comes back then leaves right away again it is unbearable. Last time he pretty much stopped sleeping altogether, and cried and whined all day & night. Hopefully we'll pull through unscathed this time! In case any of our friends and family are actually reading this, and we haven't told you.....Patrick is accepted to Carleton for this Sept. That means two years in Ottawa, then back to Winnipeg after that for probably 4 years. We are really excited but Patrick is worried about going back to be a student after all this time!
Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

One determined Girl!

Alia at 19 weeks!

Throat/Finger connection?

I wonder if there is a scientific basis for my theory that the throat and fingers are connected in some way? Here's what I think....I lost my voice from this horrific cold I've been fighting, and since I was unable to talk (use my throat), I was suddenly unable to type (use my fingers). How 'bout that one!
I've been working on figuring out how to post video. If someone reading this knows how to do it please help. My computer engineer husband (some professional) can't figure it out either. I really want to show a video of Alia crawling. This girl is something else I tell ya...wow. She is on a mission to start keeping up to her brother. As proud as I am that she is so driven, I wish I could have had a few more months of immobility on her part. Now I have to keep my eyes not just on Quinten climbing, jumping and terrorizing in general, but now Alia is getting her hands & mouth on everything!

30 is just another number

Turning 30 was a very anticlimactic experience, as most birthdays have been for me. The next time I go to the liquor store I am going to giggle and act silly and see if they even consider IDing me. If they don't, then I know I am getting old. I'll let you know how that turns out.
Patrick took me out for a nice dinner and it was great to have him here. This was the first time since we have been married that he wasn't deployed somewhere on my birthday and Valentine's day.
On another note, I am pleased to share a birthday with Allison's new baby Samuel! The little guy was born at 5:46am and weighed 7lbs 8oz. They went home the same day and are doing well.

Happily sedated

Didn't post for a couple of days, I've been super sick. Someday when I am healthy and have more brain functioning I'll write about my thoughts on the pros and cons of daycare. For now, I'll leave it at one major con.......the wide array of germs that come home. I have not been exposed to so much snot in my life as I have the past few months. And not just my kids snot, but my own and Patrick's. The cold that I currently have is probably the worst one I've had in awhile. My doctor felt so sorry for me that he gave me some really strong prescription for a narcotic cough suppressant with a bunch of other feel good drugs mixed in for good measure. Like the careful mother I am, I remembered to ask if any of this would pass through in my breastmilk to Alia. When told that yes it could have a sedating effect on her as well, I worried for about 5sec. until I was told it is safe, then jumped for joy thinking finally maybe she would sleep for more than 2 hours at a time (This was not to be the case, but I was so zonked that Patrick had to do some night duty). Tomorrow is my 30th birthday, and I am not sure how to feel about that. I'll try to wrap my head around it and put down some thoughts tomorrow.

Those ungrateful kids

They say kids are getting cheeky with their parents at a younger age, but this is a bit ridiculous!

I can do that without getting sued

My reasons for starting this Blog
  1. I have been trying to get a personal web page started for quite some time and it is so complicated that I gave up. This is much easier and I can do all the things on my Blog that I wanted to do on a website, which is mainly preserve memories and post photos. I also get a chance to vent and babble on about whatever I want, which is kinda fun.
  2. My friend Allison (seen here with son Ivan, myself & Quinten) told me about a blog she has been following www.dooce.com and when I read it I thought it would be fun to do , and even though I am not a great writer or photographer, I am pretty sure I could do it without being sued or turned in to the child welfare agency.
  3. Everyone keeps asking me to send photos and videos of the kids and I can never get it straight in my head who wanted what and when things become complicated I don't get them done....see reason #1. This way I can do the work just once and then it becomes everyone else's responsibility to check in once and awhile to see what's new.

Beware the Bumbo

Yesterday afternoon a very scary thing happened. Alia fell out of her Bumbo Babyseat (see photo). I was under the impression that this was a very unlikely occurence, and we had been seating her on raised level surfaces thinking she couldn't get out. Thankfully she was just on the floor, but as she was on a tiled surface she still could have hurt herself. I checked the Bumbo web site and at the very bottom of the page it says:
SAFETY FIRST
Never leave your baby unattended. Never use on a raised or
uneven surface, as a car seat, in a bath or in other water.
BumboTM is happiest on the floor.
Do not use until your baby is fully able to support its head.

I am disappointed in myself for not being more careful, but I also think that the description and concept of the product is misleading. I wonder how many other people will make the same mistake as I did and not keep a hand near their babies at all times when they are in the Bumbo. Realistically, if the seat is "happiest" on the floor, but a baby can still fall out and hit their head, is this product really safe?

Playdate going well

You know the mommies are having a good time when the kids are locked in the dog kennel! No really, they wanted to go in there......

Runny Noses and No Sleep

What a night. I feel like I got run over by a truck. No one told me that when you're kids are sick, they don't sleep. I thought it was the other way around. Makes sense doesn't it...I mean when we are sick, we snuggle up in bed and sleep it off (as I would like to do right now). Not so with kids (or mine anyway). Quinten was up crying all night...mommy, mommy, I need you. Help me, help me. At one point I heard him cry out, and when I went in his room, there was my 6"2', 210 lb. husband curled up in a fetal position on the tiny toddler bed with his feet hanging off the end. I think Quin was calling for me because he had no room in his own bed.
Then there is baby Alia, the 10 min. wonder, whose daytime naps are just that...10 min. long. Her nights have been inconsistently bad. Sometimes she sleep shots of 3 hrs, sometimes 1hr. is the longest she can swing at a time. She is sick with the same cold type thing as the rest of the family. Her night wasn't too bad...I had to get up with her 3 or 4 times, which wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't for having to get up with Quin as well. Between those two snotty noses, as well as my own, I had to try and find some way to catch a few hours sleep. Since Patrick was snoring his sick song, which sounded like a mix between a chainsaw and a gurgling brook, I was obliged to put earplugs in, which meant that even thought Alia was in the co-sleeper beside the bed, and Quinten's room monitor was cranked on high, I was scared that one of them would need me and I wouldn't hear because of the earplugs so I kept taking them out and putting them back in all night, fighting between my need for sleep and paranoia that my babies might suffer.

Christmas 2006

Christmas this year was certainly the most memorable one for our family. Quinten was just beginning to understand the concept of Santa and presents. He loved opening his gifts as well as giving everyone else their's.
Alia's first Christmas was fun filled for her as well. She loved watching all the activity and giggling at her brothers antics.
